Shannon Hall
Math PhD student at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville
Hello! My name is Shannon Hall, and I am a PhD student studying mathematics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. My
research interests include functional analysis and operator algebras. I work with Dr. Remus Nicoară on the theory of subfactors,
where we study inclusions of von Neumann algebras. Through an invariant of subfactors called commuting squares, our work ties
into the study of complex Hadamard matrices. I am drawn to operator algebras because of the unique blend of analysis and
algebra, as well as the connections to other areas of mathematics such as quantum information theory and knot theory.
In addition to my research, I enjoy teaching and have experience as a teaching assistant for various undergraduate mathematics
courses, as well as UT's Governor's School and the Knox Math Lab. I am passionate about sharing mathematics with others and
helping students develop their understanding and appreciation of the subject.
When I'm not working on math, I enjoy running, reading, and spending time with my wife and our
four cats. Feel free to reach out via email if you'd like to connect or learn more about my work!
